Current education and practice need to evolve to ensure that the discipline of design meets sustainability drivers and equips students, teachers and professionals for the near-future. Design activists, who comprise a diverse range of designers, teachers and other actors, are setting new ambitions for design.

They seek to fundamentally challenge how, where and when design can catalyse positive impacts to address sustainability. They are also challenging who can utilise the power of the design process. To date, examination of contemporary and emergent design activism is poorly represented in the literature. This book will provide a rigorous exploration of design activism that will re-vitalise the design debate and provide a solid platform for students, teachers, design professionals and other disciplines interested in transformative design activism.

Design Activism provides a comprehensive study of contemporary and emergent design activism. This activism has a dual aim - to make positive impacts towards more sustainable ways of living and working; and to challenge and reinvigorate design praxis,. Design Activism reveals the power of design for positive social and environmental change, design with a central activist role in the sustainability challenge.

Inspired by past design activists and set against the context of global-local tensions, expressions of design activism are mapped. This is design as a political and social act, design to enable adaptive societal capacity for co-futuring.

Instead of focusing solely on design research, I decided to condense my findings into a list of broader sociocultural themes that I believe will be of importance in the development of a social enterprise that will generate lasting positive impact. By employing altruistic practices to both societal and global causes—design, like activism— can create positive change. Socially Active Design is related to Design Activism, as it focuses on a societal change centered on more sustainable living, working and producing habits Fuad-Luke , p. Design Activism and Socially Active Design share a reciprocal relationship, one that is based on the impetus of positive transformational change for society. Interestingly, although storytelling is discussed in the context of design intermittently, it is rarely taught as a skill within the framework of design-oriented education. This statement reflects the growing need for designers to take responsibility for the moral dimensions of the stories they communicate through their design solutions. Counter-narratives told through storytelling are central to social design and design activism, as they question the existing paradigm in society, and demonstrate alternative possibilities.

Slow design

Common qualities of Slow Design include: Holistic — taking into account as many relevant short and long term factors as possible. Sustainable — considering the cradle-to-cradle impacts and reducing harm as much as possible including the precautionary principle. Elegant — finding the simplest and most concise solutions that provide the desired results. Tailored — creating specific solutions that fit a particular situation.
